There are also other player apps available for Android devices, with varying levels of user information available. Kodi also has the same metadata available, plus it has available add-ons that can provide extended media information. Roku at least offers some metadata for the media, compared to virtually nothing on any Smart TV I've used. I think the best player I've found for DLNA use is either Roku, using the Roku Media Player app, or Kodi, which is available for many Android based players, such as the Nvidia Shield. For streaming players, you can find some player apps that are improvements over the Smart TVs, but not by a lot. Most Smart TVs have a DLNA player included, but none I've ever seen have a very nice user interface. Serviio does not offer any player apps of its own, so you are dependent on whatever player you have available to use on a streaming device. Plex and Serviio can co-exist on the same computer without a problem. Plex has the advantage of having a well designed app that is available on my streaming players and Smart TVs, as well as the web interface for streaming via a browser. Widgets aren't as good, the app doesn't default to my Rasplex instance (I have to pick it each time I load the app up again), and finally when I load an episode of something, I have to go right back to home before I can switch to Movies or another TV show (Yatse just swipes in from the side).Plex and Serviio are two similar but separate programs. The Plex app is nowhere near as good as the Yatse app for Android in my opinion. I really like the interface, and the way that I can control a lot of stuff from the server side. Sometimes shows or films miss poster images in the Yatse UI, never figured out how to get them all to show up reliably. Same for resume points, if I half watch something if often doesn't remember. If I watch say S01E01 then it only marks it as watched when I watch the next episode. Main gripe with it is that Yatse often seems to be "behind" me in terms of what I am watching. ![]() Yatse is a pretty awesome app for playing stuff from my phone. Works well, plays whatever I throw at it via the NAS.īasic UI, not that amazing looks wise but is very functional. Is there something that will cover my usage better? I get most of what I want with KODI but resuming/keeping track of where I am isn't good enough, and Plex is great but the mobile app is nowhere near as nice as Yatse to use generally speaking. For KODI I was running Openelec, for Plex Rasplex. Some thoughts on what I like/don't like below. Been weighing up the pros and cons of Plex, KODI etc. No desire to share media outside of my home environment. ![]()
